The mission of the Advent Movement is the same as that of the original Adventist pioneers: to prepare ourselves and invite others to be a people ready to hasten the return of Christ. Through a demonstration of faith in Jesus, we aim to return to His government. Understanding how God has led us in the past builds the faith needed to prepare for the rapid events coming in the future.
“We have nothing to fear for the future, except as we shall forget the way the Lord has led us, and His teaching in our past history.”
Life Sketches (LS 196.2)
Sadly, many have either forgotten or never studied our history, resulting in a loss of identity.
“But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people...”
1 Peter 2:9
What is our Identity?
It is crucial to reconnect with who we are. Our identity as a people is built upon two distinct components: Seventh-day and Adventist. These two pillars define not only our name but also the foundation of our mission and calling. To understand our purpose, we must first establish what it means to be both:
Seventh-Day1
Adventist2
“We are Seventh-day Adventists. Are we ashamed of our name? We answer, “No, no! We are not. It is the name the Lord has given us. It points out the truth that is to be the test of the churches.”
Letter 110, 1902 (2SM 384.1)
“The name Seventh-day Adventist carries the true features of our faith in front, and will convict the inquiring mind. Like an arrow from the Lord's quiver, it will wound the transgressors of God's law, and will lead to repentance toward God and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Testimonies for the Church (1T 224.2)
Seventh-Day
/sev-uhnth-dey/
A Christian denomination that follows the Biblical 7th-day as the day of rest & religious observance.
“Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the Lord that doth sanctify you.”
Exodus 31:13
“All who regard the Sabbath as a sign between them and God, showing that He is the God who sanctifies them, will represent the principles of His government.”
Testimonies (6T 353.4)
The keeping of the Sabbath is a sacred sign of our desire to be sanctified by God, reflecting our commitment to His covenant and His transforming power in our lives. But our identity is not complete without its second vital component.
What is the other defining aspect of who we are?
Adventist
/ˈadˌven(t)əst/
Believing in the imminent second coming of Christ.
“I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.”
John 14:3
“Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ”
Titus 2:13
“Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God...”
2 Peter 3:12
Not only do we believe Jesus will return imminently, but that we have a role to play to hasten His return!
“By giving the gospel to the world
it is in our power to hasten our Lord's return...”
Desire of Ages (DA 633.3)
Our Role in Hastening Jesus Return
“Long has God waited for the spirit of service to take possession of the whole church so that everyone shall be working for Him according to his ability. When the members of the church of God do their appointed work in the needy fields at home and abroad, in fulfillment of the gospel commission, the whole world will soon be warned and the Lord Jesus will return to this earth with power and great glory.”
The Acts of the Apostles (AA 111.1)
“Had the purpose of God been carried out by His people in giving to the world the message of mercy, Christ would, ere this, have come to the earth, and the saints would have received their welcome into the city of God.”
Testimonies for the Church, vol. 9 (9T 29.2)
